XPRIZE LAUNCHES DESIGN OF ZERO-WASTE MINING PRIZE IN CESCO WEEK
XPRIZE, is a global platform of non-profit disruptive innovation founded by Peter Diamandis – founder of Singularity University- and participated in the “3rd International Seminar on Mining and Sustainability: Tailings, Challenges and Trends”, which was held within the framework of Cesco Week in conjunction with Ecometales, where the launch of the design stage of the challenge called Zero-Waste Mining was announced. XPRIZE is known as the leader of global competitions that encourage the development of exponential technologies that accelerate humanity towards a better future.
This initiative is supported by the Chilean Mining Consortium (ChMC), an association between Anglo American, Antofagasta Minerals and BHP. It is the first XPRIZE aimed at mining at a global level, recognizing the urgent need for a technological breakthrough (disruptive innovation known as “moonshots thinking”) and a global competition incentivized as Zero-Waste Mining. The competition hopes to overcome great obstacles of innovation and catalyze technological breakthroughs towards real mining without waste.
This initiative will allow competitors from Chile and around the world to access test sites and give them the opportunity to be judged by a global panel of mining experts. This will ensure a broad impact and true scalability of their technologies. The XPRIZE award design process is anchored in an open-collaboration model encouraging co-creation among mining companies, innovators, industry leaders, academia, research centers, government, non-governmental organizations, self-taught pioneers (mavericks) and the general public. Competitors come from all over the world and from a variety of industries and diverse technological expertise.
XPRIZE is planning to launch the award in mid-2020 with a prize pool of US $ 20 million.
